~~Senior Officer's Quarters~~

After the awards ceremony, Rog had returned to his quarters. He
thought the ceremony had gone quite well. As he sat down in his chair,
he saw that he had a message from Starfleet Command. Tapping his
keyboard, he brought up and read the message. "Contact Starfleet Command
at my earliest convenience? I wonder what this is about?" He tapped the
buttons and waited to be connected with Starfleet Command.

"Ah… Commander Finney. Thank you for returning the call. Admiral
Batenburg would like to meet with you." Lieutenant St Clair, the
Admiral's aide, said when she saw who called. "Let me just check her
schedule…" St Claire looked away for a moment to the other screen.
"Would you be able to be at HQ at 1100 hours?"

Rog smiled and said,"1100 sounds fine lieutenant. Tell the admiral I'll
be there."

"I'll see you then, Commander."

"Right this way, Commander." St Clair smiled at Finney and led him to
the main office. "Admiral, Commander Finney is here." She nodded to both
and then closed the door behind them.

"Commander Finney. Good to see you again." Suzanna said. The last time
they'd seen each other she had still been the CO on Forrest and the
Meridian had just helped save the day during the Nausicaan attack. "Can
I get you something to drink?"

Rog replied,"No thanks ma'am, I'm good."

"Please take a seat, Commander." Suzanna said and gestured to the chairs
opposite her desk. "I'll come straight to the point, Commander. I have a
classified mission for the Meridian, which will require a lot of your
skills and coordination with other groups."

Rog took a seat and said, "A classified mission admiral? What's it
about? Which other groups will the Meridian be working with?" A
classified mission right after losing a captain? Very interesting he
thought.

Suzanna thought a moment how to continue and then phrased it similarly
to how Commander Gallagher had done. "Given the recent identification of
Romulan involvement in aggressive actions against the United Earth
Government and the Coalition of Planets, Starfleet Intelligence has
taken steps to further clarify the situation. Recently, analysts have
identified an installation on the border of what we think is Romulan
space used for strategic planning and operations. Key Romulan figures
have been coordinating anti-Coalition activities from this base, and the
majority of recent activity has been traced back to there. It has been
decided to confronting this installation in the best interests of
national, international, and interstellar security."

Rog rubbed his chin. He replied, "By confronting you mean attacking and
destroying right admiral? Ma'am what sort of intel do we have that
proves the Romulans are working from this base? Oh and is it a good idea
to attack a base that I assume is in Romulan territory, without a formal
declaration of war? I mean if we do that, then what's to stop them from
using the attack for political purposes?"

"Commander," Suzanna frowned for a moment, "as I said, it is assumed to
be on the border of what we think is their territory. The decision has
been made by the President, with approval of the security council. You
will be leading a task force consisting of the Meridian, a Sol, and two
Venus riding shotgun. A MACO detachment will board the installation and
establish a foothold for the combined strength of the task force's
armoury personnel. While the armoury element secures the station, the
MACOs will probe for intelligence and make the final recommendation as
to the fate of the installation: occupation, sabotage or if need be
destroy the facility."

Rog nodded, he knew when to keep his mouth shut. He replied,
"Understood ma'am. How large will the MACO detachment be exactly? If the
Romulans send ships after us, do we have permission to return fire? Oh
and when will this mission start?"

"I've ensured that you will have full access to the intel that was
gathered, on a classified level. Although the MACOs decide the ultimate
fate of the facility, your primary concern is the safety of the task
force. You need to get in touch with Captain Mason and discuss the size
of the detachment with him. He will have a recommendation for you."
Suzanna elaborated. "I know the current action is totally different from
what Starfleet and Earth have done so far, but the President, together
with the security council decided they wanted to make a stand and show
that we are not to be played with. Earth won't be a sitting duck like
what happened with the Xindi is what the message is."

Rog smiled and replied, "Sounds good to me ma'am. I agree, we don't want
a repeat of the Xindi attack. Is there anything else ma'am?"

"No, I think you have more than enough on your hands. As I mentioned,
this is a highly classified mission. If there is anything, contact
either Commodore Stirling or I directly, only on a secure channel. A lot
is riding on it." Suzanna smiled at Roger.

Rog stood up and said,"Yes ma'am." He then turned and left. As he walked out
he began considering all the variables of his new assignment.
