It was dark outside as Suzanna strolled through the garden at HQ towards
the waterfront. The path was well lit, and several meters behind her was
a security detail. Assigned to the Starfleet Commander at President
Garcia's insistence. She wasn't very keen on it, but that was the way it
was. One thing she has learned from a good friend was to pick her
battles carefully, and this was one that wasn't worth her energy to
fight. After spending yet another day cooped up in her office for long
hours, she needed to clear her head. Too much was going on at the same
time, and that was what had brought her outside.
A meeting was schedule with the President and Starfleet Intel in two
days, and although officially, she didn't know what it was about, she
did know. And in many ways, she didn't like it. Ever since the word
Romulan had fallen as the instigators of the tension and attacks that
had been happening in the last year... Who were these Romulans? What did
they want? Information had been shared at the highest level with the
Vulcans, but they had not said much. So far the message from the Vulcans
was to stay out of it.
The path curled down towards the waterfront and Suzanna sat down on one
of the benches looking out over the Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge in
the distance. The lights showing vehicles moving across it, even though
she couldn't hear them because of the distance. She pulled a couple of
datapads out of the pocket of her jacket. One contained the message from
Thomas; she'd seen it arrive but had been far too busy to open it yet.
One meeting after another, followed by preparation time for the next
one. And she didn't want to rush this message. But take the time to read
it and respond. It was like a treat. For a brief moment she allowed
herself to think about him, something that normally was reserved for off
duty time.
Placing the datapad at the bottom, Suzanna looked at the next one; it
was an older report and request from Captain McKenzie to set up a
detached campus for Starfleet Academy at New Darwin Colony. Suzanna read
over the proposal one more time, she'd seen the request before and it
had gone round the various stops for commenting before the final
decision to be made by her. The general consensus was positive and
encouraging it and Suzanna agreed with it all. Using the stylus, she
signed it and added a thumb print as well. With that, her aide for
forward the orders to the Academy to start working on the set up, and
she also made a quick note that she would be happy to meet with the
Commandant to discuss the project.
The final datapad in the stack she had taken with her was related to the
Challenger. A review of its most recent missions as well as a promotion
request. What she read was impressive; the comments of the various
people on this request were positive and encouraging. No reason not to
approve it. Again, Suzanna signed with the stylus and then authenticated
it with a thumb print. These were the very basic orders that would go
out but there was nothing more fun than to surprise the hardworking
Commanding Officers. With a small grin on her face, Suzanna gathered the
datapads and headed back into the building and her office, to place a
call to the Challenger.
