 <Hall of State, Romulus>

"...and as we speak the ruling council of the Andorian Empire has been
crushed and Imperial Troops are marching in the streets. The Coalition of
Planets has turned its back on a founding member and Earth is becoming more
and more isolated..."

The was a subdued applause from the gathered Senators, The Praetor had been
speaking for more than three hours, as was his custom, and few of the
assembly were still paying attention, "...on the Klingon border, we have
received word that our Jo'spire mercenaries have driven the human fleet from
Fautan and are landing troops to occupy the colony..."

In the balcony Senator Taris leaned against the green stone banister and
watched the speech skeptically, "The coup on Andoria failed..." she said as
Sub-commander Patalk stepped up behind her.

The young soldier had been assigned to the Senator's staff only a few weeks
before, replacing a long-time aide. That usually meant Tal'shiar
connections, but Taris had long since realized that even a Tal'shiar spy
could be trust to be a Tal'shiar spy.

"Cadet Nanclus is waiting for you," Patalk said in his rough Rarathik drawl,
something Taris believed the spy used to give people the wrong impression.

Taris brightened ever so slightly and started walking back to her office.
The Senator moved at a quick pace that few Remans were able to keep, but
Patalk was fast on her heels.

As Taris swung the doors to her office open, a broad toothy smile spread
across her face, "Welcome to Dartha, my boy..." she said slapping the cadet
on the shoulders, "how was your journey?"

"It was very comfortable Senator," Nanclus responded as any cadet should.

"Good, good," Taris said returning to her desk, "cousin I'd *like* you to
meet my new aide Sub-commander Patalk, he is a Tal'shiar spy."

Taris watched the boy and Patalk carefully, neither showed much reaction,
"Jolan'tru Sub-commander."

"Jolan'tru cadet, Senator," Patalk nodded as he backed out of the office,
pulling the doors shut.

"Very good, cousin," Taris leaned forward on her desk, "we will make a
diplomat of you yet, how is your mother and father?"

"They are well, considering," Nanclus replied, taking a seat after Taris
waved him to a small chair in front of the desk, "they saw me to the
transport. Father was grateful that you sponsored my entry into the
Academy."

"Family is very import-"

"Senator Taris," Patalk's voice interrupted through the desk comm.

"Yes, Sub-commander," Taris responded turning to the display.

"Commander Chulak on subspace," Patalk continued.

"One moment," Taris stood up and walked over to Nanclus, "I'm afraid you
must leave now, you will understand when you are older. I will see you again
at Orientation."

"Hann'yyo cousin," Nanclus said walking to the door, "I will not let you
down."

Taris smiled until the doors closed, then wiht a scowl she returned to her
desk, "Chulak this better be good."

"Phase One is a success," Chulak's gravelly voice, "we have the ship intact
and the crew alive."

"Excellent, proceed with Phase Two, I will arrive in one week," Taris
replied leaning back in her chair, a smile returning to her lips, "if this
plan succeeds you'll be Admiral Chulak."

"...and you will be Praetor Taris. Jolan'tru Senator."

Taris stood up and looked out over the Apnex Sea, contemplating her rise to
power, "Jolan'tru Commander."
