Oh my god, oh my god,
was the thought that ran through Rece's
mind as she entered the late
Admiral Batenburg's office. She had
expected to be considered for the
promotion to Fleet Operations,
not to be handed the job out of the blue!
"Okay,
calm down, Rece. Relax, don't panic, think pleasant thoughts,"
she
muttered, almost like a mantra. Very shortly, however, her mind
became
preoccupied as she thought about the strange look of misery
from Rear
Admiral Garroway. Being responsible for saving Earth was
certainly a
heavy burden, and now it was on her too.
As she entered the office, she stared at the mountain of paperwork
that was on the desk. For the next hour she went over each
report
carefully. And the more she read, the more her heart sank.
So
far they were holding their own against the Romulans...barely
However if the Romulans, Naussicans, and Klingons pooled their
resources, Earth
could easily be wiped out. The Vulcans had offered
some aid, but would
it be enough? And given the differences between
their two people, how
far could the Vulcans be counted on? No, they
needed more allies. They
needed some kind of unified front.....
The only good news out of
the reports was that a Sol and a Neptune
Class ship had come on-line
and was going to be deployed soon-the
Pantheon and Vanguard, respectfully. But it was the only good news she
could see, unless there was some kind of miraculous plan hiding in the
bottom of the paperwork somewhere.
‘Don't thank me yet', was what Garroway had said. A few hours in the
office and she was starting to have a feeling of what he was talking about.
