[ Deep Space, somewhere between Jupiter's Ghost and Earth ]
The Endeavor had been on her way home when sensors picked up ships of the
fleet scattered along the way. Battle repairs hadn't held, and some ships
were stranded without support. They were past the point of no return,
however, and it was either fix it and finish the trip home, or scuttle them.
Naturally, no commanding officer or crew entertained the option of
scuttling. So Endeavor and any other available ships took up defensive
positions as the battered fleet bound its wounds with even more spit and
bailing wire.
One of the starships on defensive patrol was the Luddington, though some
would argue she was in just as much need of repair as the ships she guarded.
Garroway had requested a meeting with Michaels, and the two commanding
officers were enjoying a "working lunch".
[ Endeavor, Captain's Mess ]
"As the next ranking CO out here at the moment," Garroway was saying, "I'll
be counting on you and Luddington to help coordinate the defense and repair
activities. I know we all hoped to be home long before now, but there's
still too much to do."
Michaels picked up the mug before him. "I completely understand Admiral.
Since we can't always prepare for the unexpected, we just have to learn to
improvise. "
"Being explorers," Garroway nodded, "improvising in the face of the
unexpected is what we're good at. I just wish we didn't have to improvise
at every step of the way. Just once I'd like to do something /routine/."
"Order the same breakfast the next five days in a row, sir. This is war.
In war,
routine means predictable, and being predictable gets us all killed."
Michaels took a sip of his coffee. "My recommendation is a good omelet and
a bagel sir."
Garroway laughed and replied, "Good advice." He sipped his own coffee and
looked at Michaels again. "Thought about a post at Command, Captain?"
"My goal has been to get promoted to a large ship first, not that I'm
complaining about Luddington, she's a sweet little girl. I would be
remiss to say that a posting at Command wasn't on the list." Michaels
replied.
"Well you're on /my/ list now, Captain Michaels," Garroway smiled. "I'm
having a hard time keeping positions filled, and I need good people /now/.
But we'll talk more about this later. Right now I just want to get
everyone back."
Michaels brows raised with interest. Was there a possibility for a new
posting? He would think on it later. "We'll get them back, even if we have
to open every pack of chewing gum to get them there in one piece."
