// Remote Comm Station, Oonah Lotmah //
Varre' sat dozing in the dim light of the small comm station. She had
left the small door slightly ajar so she at least could hear the birds
and the insects. Between the birds and the gik¹lee monkeys, she was sure
she¹d notice if someone were moving around in the area. The birds who go
quiet and the gik¹lees would go nuts. Still, the quiet, the waiting, the
after-adrenalin rush resulted in sleepiness that was hard to refuse. She
took another sip from her water bottle.
"Safe Site #1 to Varre'. You still around there, chica?"
It was Nita Gonzalez, one of the communications department workers. She
had been covering the comm unit at the Safe Site tirelessly. "I am being
here, Nita. What's news?"
"Some of the people from the Infirmary have arrived at SS#1. We have
ten. They said the rescue team made it in without injury and all all
working their way back. They said there were not many Klingons there
guarding. The Dali said the Klingons had been arguing about the truth of
the destruction of their ships in space. Many had departed to go to the
Command Center. No news yet from there though," explained the woman.
"Roger that," Varre' replied. "I will be relaying that to space when
they check in next time. It is good news. Yes! I have not heard from
either ship since I talking to you before. Will be standing by. Varre' out."
"SS1 out."
Koqui', the little golden volsha, had followed Varre¹ to the remote
station this time, and she was glad of the company as he slithered in
the doorway. He dropped a mostly dead rodent at her feet and she thank
him. Once his gift was properly appreciated, he sat down to the process
of dining. Varre¹ watched absently for a while, thinking she was glad
she didn¹t have to pick the hair off her food and eat it raw, though
some of what she had eaten as a slave had made Koqui¹s little treat look
almost appetizing. She looked up when there came a twitter from the
speaker next to her.
=I say again, ESS Constitution transmitting to New Darwin Colony over
Youngblood Protocol. This is Lieutenant Commander Ibarra. Do you read?=
Varre' turned quickly to the microphone again. "Aye Sir. Varre' Rahndi
hereat Youngblood's protocol. Go ahead Commonder Ibarra."
=Shireev Rahndi, it's good to hear your voice. Here's the situation:
Captain Oliver and Lieutenant Shepard have taken the Command Center with
a team from our military contingent. The Infirmary was taken by a team
from your Safe Site One, and has been cleared and secured with Klingon
prisoners inside. Your team is falling back to the safe site with one
of our communicators so they can contact us on encrypted channels. I'm
going to send the comm codes to you on this transmission so you can tell
whoever else you are in contact with. It's imperative that we can all
communicate effectively and securely. Do you understand?=
"You are giving me codes to give to our people so they can be talking to
each other," she repeated back. "Do I need to come back here to this
station?"
=Once you have the codes, you can contact the Constitution and the
ground forces from any comms device. And I would suggest contacting
Major Mason and Captain Oliver soonest.= There was a break in the
transmission. =Constitution and Aurora are a little preoccupied at the
moment, but I'll continue to coordinate for as long as I can.=
"Okay. I be running back to give codes in person to Lutent Hickey and
finding Lutent Austin's group too. Aa, with the codes, I can contact
Major Mason and Captain Oliver from here now, I am thinking, before I
running back to Safe Site 1? Yes?"
=Affirmative, Shireev Rahndi. We don't need to use the Youngblood
Protocol to keep in touch anymore. The codes will put us all in contact
over channels that the Klingons and Romulans can't listen in on. Then
we can start coordinating operations and retake your colony.=
Varre' nodded, unconsciously, fixing in her mind the fastest way to get
back to the Safe Site #1. "Okay," she said, again using her favorite
e-standard word. "The codes have come in on the screen. I will memorize
them, and write them down. You taking care of yourself in space, Ibarra.
We will celebrate our victories with malo when you come down to New
Darwin," she assured him.
=Sounds good. Talk to you soon.=
"Varre' out." She felt a strange sense of loss at closing the
conversation. Shaking her head, and wrote the codes in pen on the tongue
of her boot, committed the numbers to memory, closed down the equipment
at the remote station and slipped out the doorway, the little vol'sha at
her heels. The late afternoon shadows were long among the trees of the
forest as she set her pace at a brisk jog and made for the 45 minute
trek back to the Safe Site #1.
