Emily Garroway paused to suck down a bottle of water, holding onto the door
jam into the lab area with one hand, prepared for the ship to make another
radical shift in direction or worst case, be hit by incoming fire. She was
rewarded with just such a challenge to the inertial dampeners.
They'd had 14 minor injuries, mostly burns from overloaded equipment. But
three cases had been serious. Cullen had brought in a crewman who had
lurched forward and stabbed himself in the gut with a screwdriver. The guy
was damn lucky he hadn't perforated his bowel. He'd recover fine.
A more complicated situation had occurred on E Deck when PO Lucas Mendenthal
had been snapped in face by a broken drive belt on an auxiliary starter
motor, resulting in the partial evulsion of the eyeball. It was perhaps the
only drive belt on the entire ship, but it had been overtaxed in a freak
accident involving another angry crewman who wacked the little motor with a
large spanner. The rod caught in between the belt and the rotor and pried
the belt off the wheel, whereupon the belt snapped and caught Mendenthal in
the face. It had been a challenge to save the eye on an unstable ship, but
again, the crewman was lucky and the flying had been smooth and steady
through the operation.
The third case had been SMCPO Robert Carpenter. At age 57, he was an
experienced starship trooper, but a bit old fashioned in his irrational fear
of the enemy: the physician. He had managed to avoid over half of his
required medical exams until Emily had come aboard and tightened the reins
on the exam schedules. As a result, in the last exam, she had diagnosed an
almost non-existent condition in anyone with proper medical care: heart
disease. She had prescribed medication and a regimen of exercise and the man
was due for a re-exam in 3 weeks. He would not make it. He was dead, at 57,
from a massive heart attack.
In a space battle, rarely did someone die of direct enemy contact, unless
the enemy boarded the ship or the ship was so badly damaged that there was a
hull breach. Most injuries occurred because of freak circumstances,
equipment failure, human error. Cullen and his partner surged into the
Sickbay, calling out vital stats, a woman crying out in fear and pain.
Emily's short water break was over.
