Capt Rogers, Director of Life Science for Sector 7, took a quick sip of
his coffee and set the cup out of sight of the telecomm camera and
awaited the connect to Cmdr Talia Brennan at Outpost Maxwell Forrest.
Rogers was in charge of special projects for the Life Science Division,
specifically focused on the outlying edges of Fleet patrolled space. The
screen flickered, went blue and brought up the image of the petite
Commander. <br>
<br>
"Cmdr Brennan, I trust things are running smoothly at Forrest. I haven't
heard a peep from you in some time," he said.<br>
<br>
"It's been a bit busy here sir, but yes things are running according to
schedule. Or at least as close as can be expected." Brennan replied. <br>
<br>
"I’ll get to the point. Command has been considering a little more Fleet
presence on the surface of Njord. It would be primarily focused toward
Scientific issues, but not entirely. I understand Engineering and
Medical in particular have an interest there. Ops, Comms and Security
too. We are talking a small, but residential, compound, some offices,
residences for some Fleet personnel, and a Science lab on the surface.
That should make you happy," Rogers nodded, knowing that Talia had been
wrangling for a permanent lab on the planet for some time. <br>
<br>
"Yes sir. We currently have the modules on the southern continent and
those are only temporary structures, so yes a permanent facility would
be welcomed."<br>
<br>
"I'd like to put someone in charge down there that would ultimately
answer to you of course, but could be a resident presence on the surface
and work specifically with the Krachgantz people. Not living in their
immediate colony, perhaps. That is still up in the air. Thompson is to
work with the Governor and see what might be mutually acceptable,”
explained Rogers.<br>
<br>
"The Krachgantz people have always been willing to work with us, to a
point of course. But I don't foresee any difficulties." Brennan
replied. The Kraca had always been willing to work with her or any of
staff, long as they didn't play with any more of their technology;
especially the off limit stuff. "If I may sir, do you have any one in
mind?" <br>
<br>
" I think I have just the man for the job. Lt Steven Cassidy. He's
currently the Professor of Cultural Anthropology and Linguistics at the
Academy in New Darwin Colony, soon to be promoted to LtCmdr. Done great
things merging the Daliwakan people into the Fleet contingent there.
This turns him around a little, assimilating the Fleet into the
established Kraca colony. But he's a good man, good leader, dependable,
excellent in-the-field man, not a paper pusher. Has a gift for languages
and diplomacy too. He’s written the book for the DaKee language at
Gamma Sagittarii II. And I know he'd jump at the chance to live with the
odd language of the Kraca people. Any thoughts?" asked Rogers. <br>
<br>
"I think that Lt Cassidy would work out fine. I've never met him myself
but I've read several of his papers and a few of my staff have known
him from previous assignments. A a couple of us, including myself have a
decent rapport with a few of the Kracas. They been assisting us with
general data collection on a couple of projects we have running in their
region. I'm sure that if nothing else they would be willing meet and
discuss possibilities."<br>
<br>
“Sounds good then. I’ll make the contact with Cassidy and get him to
Forrest ASAP to get him in on the ground floor of this thing. You still
liking it so well out there? Not lonely for good ol’ Terra firma? I can
always use a good leader with experience like yours here Starfleet
Science.” He was partially paying her a compliment and partially hoping
he might snag a good CSO back to Headquarters. It was hard to rein these
field operative scientists back ‘home.’ <br>
<br>
Brennan smiled. There had been a few times when she had been just about
ready to throw in the towel and head back to Earth, but then something
or someone would come along and remind her why she was out here. "I'm
not quite ready to come home yet. But I will certainly keep your
comments in mind sir, for when I am."<br>
<br></div></div>
“See that you do, Commander. Anything else I can put in for you while
I’m requisitioning things for this new venture? Always said the only way
Science gets the good stuff is to piggy back it onto some other project
the Fleet’s backing because it was ‘their idea.’ If you can’t think of
it now, send me a request. Equipment or personnel you might want could
be rigged into the planet-side contingent and be available to your labs
on the Station.” <br>
<br>
"I'll have a list out to you by tomorrow." Brennan replied.<br>
<br>
“Well, I look forward to hearing from you then. Thank you for time here
today and good luck with this new project, Commander,” the Captain said.
<br>
<br>
"Thank you sir." Brennan said just before the call ended. She sat there briefly stunned by all that had just happened. Not only had the science facility for Njord been approved, one of her's and Commander Conway's dreams for the planet, but she had also been offered a place back home with Headquarters. What the hell had she been thinking passing that up? The thought raced through her mind. Doing her job here, was the answer she came up with. <br>
