Admiral DeForest had looked at the list of suggestions from all of the
medical departments of the ships currently in space dock. What an
opportunity for all of them to get together and share ideas and make the
changes that would keep the medical department cutting edge. Opening a
screen, he sent the following message to the CMO's of the ships..

=^=There will be a meeting of the four NX CMO’s tomorrow morning at 0900
hours at the Consortium conference room. This will be your chance to bring
your ideas for improvements to the table and get them approved. I look
forward to meeting with all of you tomorrow morning. Admiral R.
DeForest.=^=

Admiral Deforest arrived early to ensure that there was ample drink and
snacks for this meeting. He was excited to hear their ideas and make the
improvements that he had been hearing about. He stood looking out over the
bay waiting for the CMO's to arrive.

Dr Emily Garroway, the CMO from the ESS Intrepid entered the room. She knew
she was the most junior member of this prestigious group, in spite of her
recent promotion to LtCmdr. She had to make a special effort to not appear
self-conscious of that fact, as she entered the well-appointed Consortium
conference room. It was a small conference room, perfect for such an
intimate gathering of six to eight people. In the center of the room was a
small conference, and to the left was a table laid out with coffee and tea,
and bite size breakfast treats. The entire room looked out over the city of
San Francisco, with the Bay in the distance. A gray haired gentleman in a
standard duty uniform turned from the large window and a smile erupted
across his face. That was reassuring to Emily.

“Good morning,” he said from across the room, quickly walking toward her
with his hand outstretched. “Dr Garroway, I presume. You have your brother’s
eyes, Doctor.”

Emily smiled and shook his hand. “Yes Sir,” she chuckled. She was used to
such comments. She and Admiral Thomas Garroway had much in common, including
their striking blue eyes. “Thank you, Admiral DeForest. I feel very
privileged to be here for this discussion.” She looked around the room. “I’m
the first to arrive,” she stated.

“You’re a tad bit early. But that means you get the freshest cup of coffee
and the best choice of pastries,” DeForest laughed. “Please help yourself.”
He motioned to the refreshment table at the side of the room.

“Only if you’ll join me for coffee,” she insisted. He nodded and they both
approached the table. Tucking her personal PADD under her arm, she selected
a cup of High Brazilian Breakfast Blend (labeled with a small, carefully
printed note card beside the carafe), and an apple kolache (an old Czech
baked pastry recipe consisting of a dollop of fruit rimmed by a puffy pillow
of golden brown pastry dough). She added cream to the coffee and turned to
take a seat at the round conference table. Admiral DeForest also poured a
cup of the Brazilian Blend, added sugar, and moved to the table as well.

Liza walked in her normally unruly red curly hair more unruly than normal
thanks to the wonderful humidity of the Bay. "Good morning Admiral, Doctor."
She said as she grabbed another hair pin out of her pocket and tucked a
annoyingly stray lock of hair back. Once it was in place she extended her
hand "Dr. Liza Rowe, FSS Challenger." She said to Emily.

“Very pleased to meet you, Dr. I’m Emily Garroway, Intrepid.”

DeForest watched her and with a shake of his head "Get some coffee and
pastries Dr. Rowe. We are expecting at least two others and we'll get
started." He said "I trust your trip to the Grand Canyon went well."

Liza smiled "Of course it did....Two days of hiking and camping what more
could I want." She said as she added cream and sugar to her coffee.

DeForest laughed "You were always the one in your class that liked being
outside.." He looked at Emily "This one was always suggesting that we have
class outside, at the beach, anywhere but in the classroom."

“I quite agree with that philosophy,” replied Emily with a laugh.

The noise of metal striking stone echoed into the conference room stopping
the conversation. All three looked toward the door searching for the cause.
Within a moment it became apparent as to what was the source of the echo. A
man in a black Stetson with piercing neon green eyes shifted his silver
tipped cane from the marble floor of the outer receiving area onto the
carpet of the conference room and made his way toward the group.

Stopping in front of them he turned away from the Admiral to face the women.
In a sweeping gesture he removed his hat and bowed as low as he could given
his recent physical limitations. "Stile Corbett at your service."

Deforest laughed. "I think you'll find your charm only goes so far with
these women Stile."

"Jealousy so early De," He said turning toward the Admiral and extending his
hand. "I know you have rank, but ladies first."

Deforest shook Corbett's hand and smiled. "I'm glad you're still alive."

"Only the good die young sar," Corbett answered as he put his hat back on.

"In that case I imagine you will live into eternity." Deforest replied then
turned to the others. "Dr. Corbett got caught in a hull breach and was
exposed to vacuum for almost two minutes."

"Yes…well that is a tale for another time. At the moment I’m more interested
in meeting these lovely young doctors." Corbett added as a way to deflect
the conversation."

Deforest nodded. "Dr. Emily Garroway from the Intrepid and Dr. Liza Rowe
from the Challenger."

"The pleasure is all mine." Corbett said smiling.

Liza extended her hand "Pleased to meet you Dr. Corbett. I heard about your
accident. I'm glad they got you back." She said as she finished the cup of
coffee she had gotten just a few minutes before and went for another cup.

Emily watched the exchange between Dr Corbett and both Admiral DeForest and
Dr Rowe. Again, she was aware of her youth and inexperience. She felt as
though she were in a room full of her idols. As Dr Rowe moved to get more
coffee, Emily extended her hand to Corbett. “Very pleased to meet you, Dr
Corbett. Indeed, we’re glad you are still with us, though to hear the
Admiral explain it, you are apparently a hard one to put down,” she smiled.
His eyes were quite fascinating, glowing beneath the brim of his cowboy hat.
“I take it you are from Texas, Sir?”

Sir, Corbett mused quietly. The young lady definitely had manners, she was
either a southerner, or from one of the outer colonies. Her accent he
thought put her in the latter category. Out loud he said. "Yes ma'am Texan
born and bred. Thirteen generations of Corbetts have called San Antonio home
and by your accent I would say you're from one of the colonies, yes."

“Terra Proxy,” Emily replied. “You clearly know your accents. I just watched
a lot of old fashion Old West movies. Terra Proxy gets everything about 20
years later than the rest of the known galaxy.”

Dr. Zara Bose stopped just before the door. She been CMO of the Yorktown for
all of the last 72 hours, hadn't even been out on her first deep space
mission yet and her she was at her first CMO conference. Now was not the
time to show just how green she truly was. Straightening her uniform she
took a deep breath and stepped into the conference room.

"Ahh, Good morning Doctor Bose. I'm pleased you could join us on such short
notice." DeForest said as he moved around the table to offer his hand in
greeting.

"Good morning Admiral." Zara said as she shook his hand."

"Come let me introduce you to the others. Ladies, Stile, this is Dr. Zara
Bose from the Yorktown."

Emily extended her hand, which was accepted warmly. “Emily Garroway,
formerly of the Yorktown as well,” she said with a nod. “And presently
serving aboard the Intrepid.”

"Oh. hello Dr Garroway." Zara replied with a smile her interest of the other
woman peaked. She remembered seeing the woman's name on a roster of past
Yorktown crew. "I'd love any advice you might be willing to share about the
Lady and her crew."

"Stile Corbett, ma'am." He said struggling a bit to turn toward the newcomer
and remove his hat. Manners in his world were never something to be ignored.

Zara smiled back, "A pleasure to meet you sir."

"Liza Rowe, Challenger". Liza said a warm smile firmly in place.

Emily smiled. She liked the flamboyant doctor Corbett, even if he seemed a
little over the top. She caught Zara’s eye and explained, “I was just a
science officer and medic when I was aboard Yorktown. She’s a fine ship with
a great crew. I suspect you will feel right at home very quickly.”

“Well,” said DeForest, clapping his hands together, “Since we are all here
and acquainted, maybe we can move on. I’m afraid I did not hear back from
either Dr Cassidy on Forrest Outpost, or Dr Petrova from New Darwin. Both
had expressed interest in the past in just such a meeting of the minds as we
are having here today. I had hoped to have them in attendance by vid-comm,
but that’s not possible, apparently. In any case, tough times seem to
generate progress and there’s lots of new technology and ideas available,
both from our domestic channels, as well as shared information from our new
allies ...a lot of it health related. I’d like to hear what you people see
as being essential and how those additions of tech and information can be
used aboard our deep space vessels and outposts. So, everyone grab a hot cup
and let’s get down to business.”
